CALL FOR PAPERS: UNU-WIDER Project Conference on African Development: Myths and Realities
The UNU-WIDER Project on “African Development: Myths and Realities” looks at the reasons put forward for Africa’s disappointing development record, attempting to differentiate between myth and reality. It also seeks to determine the relative priorities that need to be given to factors that have in reality most contributed to this record, providing a blue print for public policy into the 21st Century. Substantive papers on African economic development as related to this topic are invited for a conference to take place in Accra, Ghana, December 10 to 11, 2009.

AWARD: Nestlé Prize in Creating Shared Value
The Nestlé Prize in Creating Shared Value will be awarded to an individual, NGO, or business which has demonstrated innovation in improving access to and management of water, improving the lives of farmers and rural communities, or bringing improved nutrition to populations suffering from nutritional problems. The Prize will be awarded for the first time in April 2010.

The Rights and Resources Initiative is now accepting applications for the position of Latin America Program Coordinator. The Washington-based Coordinator will ensure the strategic planning and implementation of collaborative activities with RRI Partners in Latin America designed to advance the tenure rights of forest dwellers and alleviate poverty in forest areas. Strong candidates will possess substantial experience with rural communities on issues of environment and development, human rights and livelihoods, and will demonstrate the capacity to deliver high level policy oriented work related to forest tenure and rights.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Vavilov-Frankel Fellowship
Bioversity International is pleased to announce the 2010 Call for Research Proposals for the Vavilov-Frankel Fellowship. The Fellowships Fund aims to encourage the conservation and use of plant genetic resources in developing countries by awarding Fellowships to outstanding young researchers to carry out relevant innovative research at an advanced research institute outside their own country for a period of three months to one year. One of the two Fellowships is supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), Australia.

PUBLICATION: KIT Dossier on NRM and Land Tenure
The Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) has published a new dossier on natural resource management and land tenure within the context of decentralization and governance. The aim of the KIT programme on rural decentralization and local governance is to further decentralization and governance in support of sustainable social and economic development. A specific objective is to develop knowledge on the way local governance institutions relate to, and are involved in land governance, land use, and decision-making on the management of natural resources. This dossier deals with the management of natural resources and the governance of land, which determine access to and control of assets that play a key role in rural livelihoods and often also in power relations. Due to population growth, depletion of resources, poor land potential and climate change, pressure on land and natural resources is growing, resulting in competing claims. The emergence of local governments in rural areas is changing the institutions that influence access, control and management, and thus the sustainable use of these resources.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: IFSA 2010 Symposium in Vienna
Next year, the 9th European IFSA Symposium (4-7 July 2010 in Vienna) will address a wide range of issues related to "Building sustainable rural futures - The added value of systems approaches in times of change and uncertainty". There are now 28 Workshops to choose from that cover a wide range of topics (e.g., learning processes, food systems, energy production), but also focus on different aspects within these topics (e.g., research results, project design, doctoral education, knowledge transfer) and have different formats (e.g., discussing YouTube films, exchange between practitioners, 'classical' presentations of research results).
The deadline to submit an abstract to the convenor(s) of a workshop is 15 October 2009. [more information]

The International Development Law Organization (IDLO) and the Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Development at Leiden University (VVI) are seeking submissions for an edited volume on the links between customary legal systems and legal empowerment, particularly on how engagement with customary legal systems may promote legal empowerment. The publication aims to enhance knowledge and understanding among academics, policymakers, and donors regarding the functioning of customary legal systems, and in particular their strengths and weaknesses, as tools for legal empowerment.
